February 13, 2003
James R. Rettig, university librarian at the University of Richmond, has been elected to the executive board of the American Library Association.
Rettig's three-year term on the 13-member board will begin in June. He and Michael A. Golrick, city librarian at the Bridgeport (Conn.) Public Library, and Michael Gorman, dean of library services at California State University in Fresno, were elected at the ALA midwinter meeting in Philadelphia last month. The executive board runs the affairs of the association.
Rettig has served as chair of the ALA committees on organization and publishing and served on many other committees and task forces. In 1992-93, he was president of the Reference and User Services Association, a division of ALA.
Rettig has published widely on reference services and is editor of "Distinguished Classics of Reference Publishing" and the book series "Bibliographic Guides in the Humanities." He is a member of the editorial board of "References Services Review," for which he previously served as assistant editor and associate editor.
