February 11, 2003
William R. Johnston, former president and chief operating officer of the New York Stock Exchange and current senior advisor to the NYSE chairman, will speak at the University of Richmond Feb. 19.
Johnston will address "Changes in Corporate Governance Rules: Impact on the New York Stock Exchange" and take questions from the audience. A small number of free seats for the 7:30 p.m. program in Jepson Hall may be reserved by calling (804) 287-6627.
Sponsored by the Jepson Forum, Watts Lecture Series and Richmond Quest, Johnston's appearance is hosted jointly by the Robins School of Business and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
As president-COO of the NYSE through some of the nation's most challenging times, Johnston offers an insider's view of the workings and challenges of America's financial backbone.
A director of the exchange since 1992, Johnston became its president July 1, 1996. He has been an NYSE member since 1964 and served on several of its committees, including market performance, personnel policy and compensation; institutional traders and advisory; financial and operational surveillance; and quality of markets. Johnston also chaired the subcommittee on floor facilities and was a director of the NYSE Foundation.
Currently, Johnston is president of the exchange's floor member outreach committee, as well as a member of the National Organization of Investment Professionals and treasurer and director of the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund. He serves on the advisory board of the Lubin Business School of Pace University and as a trustee emeritus of Washington and Lee University, where he earned a B.S. degree in commerce in 1961. Johnston also serves on the boards of Hollins University, Homeless Solutions and Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation.
Before joining the NYSE, Johnston was senior managing director of LaBranch and Co., founder, chairman and CEO of Agora Securities, Inc., and senior vice president and director of Mitchum, Jones and Templeton Inc.
The Jepson School is the nation's first undergraduate school of leadership studies. Its mission is to educate people about leadership and prepare students to exercise leadership in service to society. In only its 10th year, the school has developed a reputation for its innovative program providing liberal arts education through a multidisciplinary course of study around the theme of leadership. An integral part of the curriculum is involvement in the Richmond community and providing informational speakers.
Johnston's visit is in conjunction with a new course on corporate governance offered as part of the Richmond MBA program at the Robins School.
