Sustainability Series Continues February 22 at University of Richmond
February 14, 2002
The developer and attorney for the environmentally progressive town of Haymount, Va., will be the speakers Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. as the three-part forum on sustainability and the built environment continues at the University of Richmond. The program, "New Urbanism, Haymount and the Law," will be held in Jepson Hall, room 118, and is open to the public at no charge.
John Clark, one of the nation's leading proponents of low-density, environmentally conscious land development, has worked for more than a decade to develop the Caroline County town of Haymount on the Rappahannock River. He will be joined by Daniel Slone, a partner of McGuireWoods, who is co-team leader for the firm's environmental solutions practice area and vice-chairman of the real estate and environmental department.
Haymount will make use of cutting-edge technology for resource conservation and energy efficiency. On-site water treatment will return wastewater to the Rappahannock, while an organic farm will help stock neighborhood grocery stores. The streets will be pedestrian-friendly, with large sidewalks and excellent visibility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. During the planning of Haymount, Clark made extensive inventories of trees, plants and animals and set up extensive wildlife corridors and easements to protect two-thirds of the site.
