University of Richmond Presents Annual Dance Concert with Late 4 Breakfast

February 1, 2002

The University of Richmond's 17th annual spring dance concert will showcase more than student dancers. The event also will be a reunion of former student and faculty musicians of the group Late 4 Breakfast.

The University Dancers will collaborate with Mike Davison, associate professor of music, and Late 4 Breakfast in four dance programs and one music performance Feb. 21-24. Late 4 Breakfast, which performed and recorded under Davison's direction from 1987-1994, plays a variety of contemporary jazz arrangements.

All performances will be held in the Alice Jepson Theatre of the Modlin Center for the Arts. Performances by the University Dancers are scheduled for Feb. 21-22 at 7:30 p.m, and Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Late 4 Breakfast concert, featuring the University Dancers, will be held Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended for all performances. Ticket information is available by calling 804-289-8980.

In its four dance concerts, the 24-member student company will perform jazz, tap and modern pieces. Myra Steinberg Daleng, director of dance, choreographed the opening "Chicken Soup for the Spirit," a piece for eight dancers accompanied by Late 4 Breakfast; and "Spirit," with original music composed for her by pianist Christopher Nickels. Anne Norman Van Gelder, assistant director of dance at the university, choreographed a pointe piece for four dancers and a solo piece for senior Kim Kircher of Dallas.

Choreographer Bill Hastings, a former dancer with Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett, is contributing a modern work based on Maya Angelou's poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Dorothy Holland, assistant professor of theatre, will read the poem.

Richmond choreographer and teacher Arthur Purslow choreographed a high-energy jazz piece. Completing the program are pieces by students and adjunct faculty member Rebecca Hodal.
Late 4 Breakfast is a six-member group comprised of guitar, drums, keyboards, bass, saxophone and Davison on trumpet. They will be performing four original tunes for the dance programs and a full repertoire of original pieces written or co-written by Davison at their Feb. 23 concert. University Dancers will perform during a portion of the Late 4 Breakfast concert.
