Harvard Divinity Professor to Deliver Keynote Address for University of Richmond Founders Week

A speech by Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox will highlight Founders Week activities at the University of Richmond.

His address, "Christianity and Pluralism," will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 in Cannon Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public.

Cox, the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Divinity, has been teaching at Harvard since the early 1960s. His numerous books include "The Secular City," "Religion in the Secular City," "Many Mansions: A Christian's Encounters with Other Faiths" and "Fire from Heaven: The Rise of Pentecostal Spirituality and the Reshaping of Religion in the Twenty-First Century."

University of Richmond professors Azizah al-Hibri, H.B. "Keo" Cavalcanti and Douglas Hicks will serve as panelists. Al-Hibri, professor of law, is a leading expert on Islam, particularly the role of women in the religion. Since Sept. 11, she has been quoted in The New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and hundreds of other international newspapers and has been on the "Newshour with Jim Lehrer" and other broadcast outlets.

Hicks teaches ethics and leadership and religious values. He also is an ordained Presbyterian minister and conducts research on religion in public life. He is author of "Inequality and Christian Ethics." Cavalcanti, associate professor of sociology, has an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology and also holds two theology degrees and a law degree. He is studying Hispanic migration and the Hispanic population in the greater Richmond area.
