PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Shapenote hymnbooks like "Sacred Harp" and "Southern
Harmony" first published in mid-nineteenth century have maintained
a style of southern folk-hymnody that was mistakenly thought to
have disappeared in the North. This five-part program celebrates
folk-inspired religious hymnody from both the North and the South.
Hymns are grouped into the program segments "Invocation,"
"The Midnight Cry," "The Young Convert," "A
Family Album: Pirates and Preachers" and "Still Water."
The audience will be invited to sing several well-known hymns with
the performers.
Founded in 1954, the Boston Camerata ensemble conducts numerous teaching, research, recording and concert projects throughout the world.
