Treadway has traveled extensively in the Balkans and Central Europe. He was a visiting Fulbright research professor at the University of Belgrade. He is the author of The Falcon and the Eagle: Montenegro and Austria-Hungary, 1908-1914 and co-editor of The Soviet Union under Gorbachev: Assessing the First Year. His current research project is titled The Strange Death of the Kingdom of Montenegro, 1914-1924.
He holds a bachelor's degree from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
