Shaw is the author of Passionate Enlightenment: Women in Tantric Buddhism, which won the 1994 James Henry Breasted Prize for the best book on Asian history. The Tantric movement, which dates to medieval India, promotes an ideal of cooperative, mutually liberative relationships between women and men while encouraging a sense of reliance on women as a source of spiritual insight and power. In 1995, Shaw received a $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study goddesses, or "female Buddhas."
