Chair of the economics department, Schmidt holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke. Past holder of the CSX Chair in Management and Accounting, he teaches statistics, econometrics and quantitative methods. His research interests include demography and economic growth, disability economics, economics of education and public policy. His recent articles examine such topics as evaluating vocational rehabilitation using longitudinal data, the role of demographic change on economic growth, and the demand effects of vehicle property taxes.
