The University of Richmond librarian, Rettig has a distinguished background in library administration. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Marquette and an MALS from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has received numerous awards from the American Library Association and is editor of Distinguished Classics of Reference Publishing and the book series Bibliographic Guides in the Humanities. He is a member of the editorial board of Reference Services Review, for which he previously served as assistant editor and associate editor. The author of numerous articles in his field, he served as a member of the American Library Association's executive board.
