The Rev. Mr. Thomas M. Mullen worked in daily journalism for more than 20 years as an editor or reporter at newspapers in Tennessee and Virginia. His reporting assignments included covering police, politics, government, education, features and religion. He traveled across the country covering religion for The Richmond News Leader in the 1980s and early 1990s. Mullen has been a copy editor, page designer, night editor, weekend editor, assistant state editor and assistant metro editor. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the Associated Baptist Press, U.S. Catholic magazine and the National Catholic Reporter.

He has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University and was an adjunct instructor for seven years at the University of Richmond before joining the faculty full time. Mullen has a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University and a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He did additional graduate studies at St. Meinrad Theological Seminary.

Mullen also is an ordained Roman Catholic deacon who assists in Catholic Campus Ministry. His teaching interests include political journalism, ethics, media and religion, feature writing and newsroom management.
