A research biologist, Mitchell holds a B.S. in biology from VCU, an M.S. in zoology from Arizona State and a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Tennessee. He has conducted inventories of amphibians and reptiles on military bases in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia and in parks in Virginia and Maryland, including Jamestown and Yorktown. He is author of The Reptiles of Virginia, is working on a companion volume on amphibians and co-writing a new edition of the two-volume Handbook of Snakes of the United States and Canada, which has not been updated since 1957.
