Leary holds a B.A. in philosophy from San Luis Rey College, an M.A. in psychology from San Jose State and a Ph.D. in history of science from the University of Chicago. Dean of Richmond's School of Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 2002, he has taught undergraduate humanities courses and undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and the history and philosophy of psychology. He is co-editor of A Century of Psychology as Science, which received the American Publishers Award for "the most outstanding scholarly and professional book in 1985 on the social and behavioral sciences." He also edited Metaphors in the History of Psychology. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, Calif., a fellow of the American Psychological Association as well as the Association of Psychological Science. He has served as chairman of the board of the American Conference of Academic Deans. As dean, he oversaw a major revision of the general education curriculum.
