A former U.S. Army sergeant, assistant commonwealth's attorney and instructor at the Henrico County (Va.) Police Academy, Lain holds a B.A. from the College of William and Mary and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

She teaches courses in evidence, civil procedure, children and the law, and constitutional criminal procedure. She also has taught criminal procedure, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy. As a prosecutor, she specialized in domestic violence, sex crimes and juvenile offender cases. In 2001, she received the Virginia Dept. of Criminal Justice Services Victim Assistance Award for outstanding contribution by a prosecutor to victims' rights and services. She won a Distinguished Educator Award for 2005-06.
