Director of debate and instructor of rhetoric, Kuswa holds a bachelor of science in international relations from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a master's degree in rhetoric and a Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Texas, Austin. He wrote his doctoral thesis on American highway shifts: the course of the interstate highway machine from 1956-1973, and his master's thesis on the Kurds and Kurdistan. He was the 1992 national champion in debate (National Debate Tournament). For several years, he has taught a course titled "The Rhetoric of Terrorism, Insecurity and the State," which focuses on labels, otherizing, violence and rhetoric.
