Kaempfer holds a B.A. from Universidad Austral, Chile; an M.A. from Universidad de Santiago, Chile; and a Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literatures from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to studying in the United States, he taught high school Spanish in Santiago. He has conducted research in Chile, Brazil and Argentina. He is finishing a book project titled Proses of Sovereignty and Emancipation in the Declarations of Independence of Argentina (1816), Chile (1818) and Brazil (1822).
