Hubbard holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He has published in numerous journals in mathematics, operations research and medicine. He teaches courses in programming, data structures, pure and applied mathematics, algorithms, numerical analysis, database systems and software development on the Web. He is the author of nine books, including Data Structures with Java, published by Prentice-Hall in 2003. He has served as an expert consultant for several legal firms, including a patent infringement case concerning business intelligence software in 2002.
