Hodges holds a bachelor's degree in industrial relations from the University of North Carolina; a master's degree in labor and industrial relations from the University of Illinois and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law.

Her numerous journal articles and presentations have included such topics as arbitration and mediation in the workplace, the Americans with Disabilities Act, workplace privacy, harassment, collective bargaining in the public sector, and employment rights for union and nonunion employees. She serves on the editorial board of Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal.
