Hass holds an A.B. in chemistry from Harvard University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Princeton University. He has specializations in economic and political sociology, states and social change, Russian society and stratification. He is author of the book Economies and Societies in a Changing World. The Challenges of Economic Sociology (Routledge, 2006). He is a member of the American Sociological Association and regional editor of World Encyclopedia of Political Systems and Parties.
