A Defense Policy Fellow and scientific consultant to the continuous electron beam accelerator facility in Newport News. Gilfoyle holds an A.B. from Franklin and Marshall College and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He received research grants of more than $400,000 from the Department of Energy and $200,000 from the National Science Foundation. Gilfoyle is a member of the task force on countering terrorism of the American Physical Society and has written and lectured on numerous topics related to nuclear physics, including security of fissile material in Russia and using nuclear materials to prevent nuclear proliferation.
