Gibson regularly speaks, consults and writes on the clash between traditional intellectual property entitlements and new technological developments. He holds a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.A., cum laude, from Yale University. He teaches intellectual property, computer law and the John Marshall Scholars seminars. Prior to coming to Richmond, he was an attorney with Williams & Connolly and worked with the U.S. Sentencing Commission, both in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the bar of Virginia, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth and D.C. circuits, and various U.S. district courts.

The Intellectual Property Institute offers University of Richmond law students a comprehensive curriculum in intellectual property subjects and enables them to earn a certificate of concentration in Intellectual Property Law. In collaboration with The Media Institute, the institute also runs the National CyberEducation Project, an educational initiative aimed at engaging undergraduate college students in discussion of the legal and social policy issues related to intellectual property protection in the digital age.
