Gabara created the international education program at Richmond and built it into a world-class study program. Nearly 50 percent of all Richmond students study abroad, and an increasing number of international students are coming to Richmond to earn degrees. Additionally, about 30 percent of Richmond's faculty members have participated in annual summer seminars abroad.
Gabara was raised in the Soviet Union and Poland. She earned a bachelor's degree in English and American literature from Bennington College, then returned to Poland for a master's degree at the University of Warsaw. She immigrated to the United States, earning a Ph.D. in Russian literature at the University of Virginia.
