Craft has published articles and conducted scholarly research on various economic topics, including the early years of the U.S. Weather Bureau, vanity license plates, and the effect of Virginia's personal property tax on vehicle ownership. A former Iowa corn and soybean farmer, Craft was a junior staff economist for the White House Council of Economic Advisers before earning a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago. He came to the University of Richmond in 1994.
