A specialist in the Middle East, particularly Yemen, Carapico received a B.A. from Alfred University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the State University of New York, Binghamton. She studied for a year in Cairo and received a certificate from the South-West Asia/North Africa program at SUNY. She is author of Civil Society in Yemen: The Political Economy of Activism in Modern Arabia. She has written numerous articles and book chapters on the Middle East, Arab women, and politics and economics in Yemen. Her current research and writing is an investigation of what American, European and international agencies do to promote democracy in the Arab world.
