Bower holds a Ph.D. in German literature and an M.A. in German from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. She earned a bachelor’s degree in German and psychology from the University of Vermont, and completed additional graduate study in Germany at Freie Universität Berlin and the Universität Hamburg.
She is the author of Ethics and Remembrance in the Poetry of Nelly Sachs and Rose Ausländer and contributed chapters to two books. Her articles and essays have appeared in a variety of German and American journals, and she has completed three translations.
At the University of Richmond since 1995, Bower has taught German film, German civilization, Holocaust studies, contemporary German and Austrian literature, German political satire and German language courses, among others.
