Ashworth holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky, a master of commerce from the University of Richmond and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina. He has served as interim dean of the Robins School of Business and director of the MBA program. He has been a visiting professor/scholar and visiting professor of management at Queensland University of Technology.
