Achter holds a B.A. from Concordia College, an M.A. from North Dakota State University, and a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Georgia, for which he wrote his dissertation, "Television as a technological medium for American politics, 1948-60: Representations of the political audience." An award winning teacher, Achter served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health on race and public understanding of genetics and human variation. He currently serves as associate editor for the journal Communication Studies.
