Richmond city school students offered secrets of applying to college at free Dec. 9 workshop

December 1, 2006

Prospective college students and their families can learn about choosing, applying and paying for college at a free workshop Dec. 9 from 9 a.m.-noon at Moore Street Baptist Church, 1408 Leigh St., Richmond.

Sponsored by University of Richmond’s education department and MSI: Richmond, a program encouraging Richmond public school students to achieve in mathematics and science, the free workshop runs from 9 a.m.-noon.

Students and parents can find out what colleges look for in applicants, as well as how to select a college, find financial aid and improve their chances of admission.

James Wright, director of MSI: Richmond, says some high school students assume that because of past academic problems they shouldn’t bother applying to college.

“The message we want kids to understand is that there is always time, and they can always turn things around and get into college,” says Wright. Also, it’s never too early to start thinking about college, he says, so parents with children of any age are welcome at the workshop.

Representatives from University of Richmond, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, St. Paul’s College and Virginia Commonwealth University will be on hand to talk with families and answer questions.

MSI: Richmond will present additional college workshops on Jan. 27 at Trinity Baptist Church, 2811 Fendall Ave.; Feb. 24 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1200 N 28th St.; and March 24 at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist, 14 W. Duval St. All will run from 9 a.m.-noon.
