University of Richmond's Robins School of Business Dean to Lead University of Denver's Daniels School of Business
December 13, 2004
Karen L. Newman, dean of the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond since 1999, announced today that she has accepted the position of dean of the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business. Newman, a Denver native, will begin her new position on July 1, 2005.
Richmond will launch a national search immediately for Newman’s replacement, according to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs June Aprille.
“Dean Newman has provided exceptional leadership to the Robins School of Business during her tenure at Richmond,” said Provost Aprille. “She has strengthened the school’s academic programs, hired a number of outstanding new faculty and expanded the school’s international focus. We wish her great success at the University of Denver.”
While at Richmond, Newman hired half of the current full time faculty, all of whom are outstanding teacher-scholars; raised money for an addition to the Robins School building; completely revamped the MBA program; and improved undergraduate curricula and employment opportunities for students. During her tenure the percentage of Robins School students studying abroad increased significantly; the Professional Development Program gained national prominence as a competency-based learning opportunity for students; and participation in the Student Managed Investment Fund increased by one-third.
“I am thrilled to join the Daniels family,” Newman said. “Daniels is a great school with tremendous momentum that is on the verge of becoming even greater.” The Daniels College is recognized as one of the top five schools in the world for producing graduates with high ethical standards. The Wall Street Journal ranks it in the top 10 for the country’s best regional business schools.
“My vision for Daniels is quality, quality, quality,” Newman said. “I would like to help build Daniels into a national school based on the quality of its programs, faculty, staff and students.”
Newman earned her MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business and has taught organizational behavior, managing change and teambuilding at Georgetown, Case Western Reserve and Bucknell. She has strong international ties, having also served as a visiting professor at the Czechoslovakian Management Center and as a visiting lecturer at the Melbourne Business School.
Newman has written extensively in the management field, having authored or co-authored more than 35 scholarly articles and book chapters on topics such as organizational change, workplace commitment and cross-cultural management practices.
She has consulted with a number of organizations that include the Department of Justice, the Marriott Corporation, General Motors and General Electric.
