Lincoln scholar to open Jepson Leadership Forum speaker series with "Wonderful Self-Reliance"

August 29, 2008

The Jepson Leadership Forum's 2008-09 season, Abraham Lincoln's Legacy of Leadership, will begin with a discussion of his vision, political management and strategic command.

Richard Carwardine, Rhodes professor of American history at the University of Oxford, will discuss "Wonderful Self-Reliance: Abraham Lincoln's Leadership," Sept. 12, 7 p.m., at the University of Richmond's Jepson Alumni Center.

Carwardine's book "Lincoln: A Life of Purpose and Power," discusses the tense political climate Lincoln faced during his political career, his religious views in relation to the war, and the development of his political agenda, including his changing views on slavery. The work earned Carwardine the Lincoln Prize in 2004, an annual award for the best non-fiction historical work on the American Civil War.

Carwardine's lecture is the first of eight events addressing Lincoln's legacy of leadership. For the full schedule, visit jepson.richmond.edu/events/forum08/.
