University of Richmond Ranked Number One Master's Level University in the South by U.S. News

August 20, 2004

The University of Richmond is ranked number one in its category for the 11th straight year by U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges Issue."

Richmond topped the "Best Universities-Master's-South" category by a wide margin, as it has since 1994. The category includes schools that focus primarily on undergraduate and master's-level programs rather than doctoral.

The magazine measures colleges and universities in seven categories: peer assessment, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.

Richmond also was included in the 2005 edition of The Princeton Review's "The Best 357 Colleges." In that survey, Richmond received four stars, the highest number possible, in academics, student selectivity and campus life. In the academics category, Richmond received a score of 96, topping Harvard, which scored 94.

The 357 colleges included in The Princeton Review represent the top 10 percent of all colleges in the nation, according to the editors. The Princeton Review selects colleges and universities for inclusion based on recommendations of independent educational consultants, research by its editors and student surveys.

"We are pleased to be ranked so highly by America's college guides once again," said University President William E. Cooper, "especially in the areas of academic quality, outstanding faculty and students, and loyal alumni."
