University of Richmond Ranked Number One Master's Level University in the South

August 22, 2003

The University of Richmond is ranked number one in its category for the 10th straight year by U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges Issue."

Richmond also was singled out as one of universities with "programs to look for." In a listing of schools "with outstanding examples of academic programs that lead to student success," Richmond was noted for having one of the nation's best programs for first-year students, along with Princeton, Harvard, Duke, Yale and others; and for providing outstanding undergraduate research opportunities, along with Amherst, M.I.T, Vanderbilt, Williams and others.

Richmond topped the "Best Universities-Master's-South" category by a wide margin, as it has since 1994. The category includes schools that focus primarily on undergraduate and master's-level programs rather than doctoral.

The magazine measures colleges and universities in seven categories: peer assessment, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.

Also this month, Richmond was included in "The Best 351 Colleges," published by The Princeton Review. In that survey, Richmond received four stars, the highest ranking possible, for academics, campus life and student selectivity. In addition, the university was ranked no. 3 in the nation in "Quality of Student Life," no. 17 in "Schools That Run like Butter" and no. 18 in "Professors Make Themselves Accessible." The Princeton Review selects colleges and universities for inclusion based on recommendations of independent educational consultants and research by its editors.
