University of Richmond Creates Endowed Chair of International Education With $1 Million Gift
August 20, 2003
The University of Richmond has created its first endowed chair in international education and named Uliana F. Gabara, dean of international education, as the first holder.
Endowed with a $1 million gift by Carole M. Weinstein, Richmond alumna and former trustee, the chair enables the appointment of a faculty member or administrator who will be pivotal to the advancement of international education at the university.
Currently, nearly half of the university's undergraduates study outside the United States for some period while earning their degrees. This fall, students from 67 countries will attend Richmond.
A native of Poland, Gabara created the university's award-winning international education program, serving as director from 1987-99 and dean since 1999. In addition to developing Richmond's international student exchange program, she supervises the annual faculty seminar abroad. That project, entering its 15th year, enables a group of Richmond professors to spend six weeks each summer conducting research in another country.
Gabara also helps recruit students from other countries and works with foundations that support exchanges and study at American colleges.
"Uliana's dedication to the university and to increasing its diversity through international education programs makes her uniquely qualified for the honor of holding the Carole M. Weinstein Chair of International Education," university President William E. Cooper said.
