University of Richmond Gamelan Ensemble concert presents unusual world music experience

University of Richmond's Gamelan Ensemble, a traditional Indonesian orchestra, will demonstrate its musical skills on handcrafted gongs, drums, xylophones and chimes in an outdoor concert April 22, 1p.m., at the Greek Theater on campus.
The program will include both instrumental numbers and dance works featuring local Balinese dancers. American experimental works for Gamelan, including Lou Harrison's "Main Bersama-Sama" will also be performed. Andrew McGraw, University of Richmond associate professor of music and an ethnomusicologist , will conduct. The audience will be invited to play the intricately carved instruments afterwards.
The public is invited, and admission is free. Children are especially welcome. Rain location is Tyler Hanes Commons.
