Cannon Chapel to Celebrate 75th Anniversary, Alumni Weekend with Brian Jones Organ Concert

April 22, 2005

University of Richmond will celebrate both the 75th anniversary of its 800-seat Cannon Memorial Chapel and Alumni Weekend 2005 with a concert by renowned organist Brian Jones on April 30 at 3 p.m.

Jones, who has recorded solo performances as well as organ-piano duets with Andrew Gordon, will play the chapel’s famous Beckerath organ. He is organist emeritus and former director of music (1984-2004) at Trinity Church on Boston’s Copley Square.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the university’s Office of the Chaplaincy at (804) 289-8500.

Jones is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and Boston University, studying under Haskell Thompson and Jack Fisher. He has given concerts throughout the United States and England during his career. His recordings have been released on the London-Polygram, Gothic, Dorian, AFKA and Arkay labels. Jones most recently served as interim director of music at the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque, N.M., from September-February.

An American Organist magazine review of Jones’ performance at an Organ Historical Society convention praised his “fine musicianship, grasp of style, and clarity of playing.”
