University of Richmond Crew Club Hosts Regatta April 6
April 1, 2002
The University of Richmond's club crew team will host a regatta April 6, with teams from four colleges, two high schools and the Virginia Boat Club competing in races on the James River.
Races begin every half hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge. Parking will be available at Robious Landing, behind James River High School.
In addition to the university and boat club teams, other schools competing include VCU, Catholic University, Trinity College of Washington, D.C., James River High School and Norfolk Academy. Organizers expect at least four boats to race in each 2,000-meter event. "There will be about 200 participants in teams of four and eight people," said Kristen Peterson, vice president of the Richmond team. Each crew will also have a coxswain.
Spectators will be able to view the races from the river bank. Boats will be allowed as long as they don't interfere with the races, said Peterson.
The regatta's location, Peterson said, "is on a wide, long stretch of river that is one of the nicest sites for crew on the East Coast."
