This course is a survey of contemporary Native American Literature. It will focus on the variety of approaches and voices from the last twenty years. Modernist and postmodernist perspectives will be differentiated while the commitment to oral tradition and continuity is established. While no window on culture, Native American Literature merges the traditions of various communities with the artistic demands of storytelling. All genres will be included.
Texts: Nothing but the Truth: An Anthology of Native American Literature, Purdy & Ruppert eds.
The Heartsong of Charging Elk, James Welch
Grand Avenue, Greg Sarris
Requirements: 2 short papers, one research paper and a final examination. One of the short papers must be on poetry and one on short fiction. Each student will be expected to introduce a writer to the class.
