APPENDIX A

Procedure for Obtaining Excused Class Absences for Student-Athletes

Use the following procedure:

  1. The Head Coach should request an excused absence through the Director of Academic Advising for Student-Athletes from the respective dean (Richmond College or Westhampton College) for all student-athletes who need to be excused. The request should state the reason of the absence.

    Example:

The football team has an away game with James Madison University at Harrisonburg, Virginia on Saturday, October 25, 1997. The student-athletes on the travel team will depart the University of Richmond by bus at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Request the following student-athletes be excused after the 9:20-10:10 a.m. class period on October 24, 1997. (The listing of student-athletes should not use nicknames unless they are included with the student-athlete's proper name, e.g., Brown, John H. "Buster").

    Brown, John H. "Buster" 123-45-5789

    Cooper, Philip W. 234-56-7890

    Hodges, Harold P. 345-67-8901

    etc.

  2. After the excused absence request has been approved it will be returned to the sports office where copies should be made for the student-athletes concerned. The student-athletes should have a copy of the approved excused absence for each professor who requires an excused absence for missed classes.

  3. The request for excused absences should be made far enough in advance to allow student-athletes to have excused absences to give their professors before the classes are missed. If it is not possible to have an absence excused in advance, the procedures in 1 and 2 above should still be followed.
