POLICY STATEMENT ON SPORTS CAMPS AND CLINICS

The University of Richmond recognizes that sports camps and clinics are an integral part of its intercollegiate athletics program. Therefore, head coaches of all intercollegiate sports may be provided an opportunity to direct a camp or clinic. These camps and clinics have two primary purposes: (a.) to give the University of Richmond exposure to prospective University of Richmond students; and (b.) to provide an opportunity for coaches to supplement their coaching salaries.

  1. Salary Considerations: Coaching intercollegiate athletics must remain the focal point of our coaches' efforts. The following policy is established to regulate coaches' compensation for camps and clinics.

For a head coach whose initial employment with the University as a head coach was prior to the 1995-96 academic year, net revenue of the camp or clinic will be divided as follows: (a.) 75% to the coach; (b.) 25% to the University. The total amount earned per year from camps and clinics may not exceed the coach's annual University salary. (The head coaches of men's basketball and women's basketball are exempt from this provision.)

For a head coach whose initial employment with the University as a head coach starts during the 1995-96 academic year or later, net revenue of the camp or clinic will be divided as follows: (a.) 50% to the coach; (b.) 50% to the University. The total amount earned per year from camps and clinics may not exceed the greater of 75% of the coach's salary or $25,000.

  2. Facility Considerations: Because of limitations on University facilities, no more than two weeks per summer may be committed to each head coach for University camps or clinics. Additional weeks will not be authorized for head coaches who coach more than one sport. Camps and clinics may, with the approval of the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities, be held during the fall and spring semesters and during academic year vacation periods.
  3. "Ownership" Considerations: Beginning January 1, 1996, all camps and clinics will be under the auspices of the University of Richmond. After this date there will be no University "contract" camps under the direction of any University of Richmond head coach. All University camps and clinics will be directed by head coaches. Assistant coaches, restricted earnings coaches, part-time coaches and volunteer coaches are not authorized to conduct University camps or clinics.
  4. "Age of Participant Considerations": The following minimum ages are established for participation in all camps and clinics: Day camps or clinics - eight (8) years of age; Overnight camps or clinics - ten (10) years of age.
  5. Governance Considerations: All camps and clinics will be operated under the appropriate policies and procedures of the NCAA and the University of Richmond [See Article Twenty-Five NCAA RULES INTERPRETATION, CERTIFICATION, AND COMPLIANCE, Appendix F - University of Richmond Coaches' Guide to Sports Camps and Clinics].
