The Allies Institute Staff Information

Staff Application Deadline:  Friday, October 5, 2007

The Allies Institute will be held on January 8-11, 2008 at the Jamestown 4-H Center.  At the Institute, approximately 40 student participants, 7 student staff members, and 7 University faculty and staff members will engage in intense, thought provoking discussions on issues like race, gender, class, and sexual orientation.   Small group discussions are held each day on topics like personal identity, friendship and family.

Who is Qualified to be on The Allies Institute Staff?

All faculty and staff at UR are welcome to apply.  Faculty and staff who have participated or volunteered with a “town” program or similar anti-bias programs are especially encouraged to apply.  Only students who have attended the Institute in 2004, 2005, 2006 or 2007 will be considered for student staff positions.

Responsibilities

The goal of the The Allies Institute is to reduce prejudice among participants without sacrificing individual or group identities of race, culture, or religious traditions.  This goal can not be accomplished without the contributions of the The Allies Institute staff.  Staff members are responsible for facilitating small group discussions that allow participants to express feelings, gain a deeper sense of self awareness and confidence, and learn more about how to accept others.  Staff members may also lead interactive large group workshops on the topics of race, class, gender and sexual orientation.  Additionally, students who are staff members are responsible for cabin management which includes facilitating a cabin orientation, “cabin gift” planning time and evening debrief sessions. All staff members are also responsible for encouraging a sense of supportive community, maintaining order and safety, implementing the The Allies Institute confidentiality and disclosure policy and abiding by all the rules of conduct set by the program as well as the program site.
