Communications Center

Who we are

The University of Richmond Police Department's Communication Center is staffed 24-hours a day, every day of the year, to answer your calls. Communications Officers answer 911 lines, ERTS phones, and business lines. We dispatch University Police and Security Officers to calls for service and we monitor fire and burglar alarms for all campus buildings. The Communications Center has direct contact with the Henrico County Communications Center and the Richmond City Division of Emergency Communications to request additional resources, like an ambulance or fire department, when needed. We also have contact with other departments throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

Our Training

All of our Communications Officers are certified dispatchers through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and are VCIN/NCIC certified through the Virginia Department of State Police.

What we do

The Communications Center is the Primary Safety Services Answering Point (PSAP) for all 911 calls made from campus telephones and emergency response telephones (ERTS phones). In addition to dispatching police officers to help you, we also dispatch SAVERS (Spider Advanced Volunteer Emergency Rescue Service) to assist our officers with medical calls.

Which number do I call for help?

For any EMERGENCY on campus, please call 9-1-1.  Here are some tips to use if you do need to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.  Emergencies include:

Medical problems Fire
Life threatening situations Crimes in progress

For non-emergency calls for service, please call 289-8715 or 8715 on campus.  Examples of non-emergency calls include:

Jump starts Escorts
Requests to open or close buildings Permission to park after hours
Noise complaints
