Dr. Tammy Barnett-Hall's
"Bureaucracy and Public Policy" Course
Student's Comments:
"The final area of class and the one that I felt I learned
the most from was the service learning project...the community
service aspect of the class was far more interesting and beneficial
than I had originally thought it would be...
"I was a little annoyed with the service learning project
at first, because I wasn't really sure what to expect. But once we
got going on these projects, the whole process was really
valuable...The service learning project inspired me to become more
involved with issues that I believe in not just in the political
realm, but in life in general."
"I am a political science major and I have yet to learn
about bureaucracy in depth. I look forward to learning about the
process and get first hand experience with it...The service project
was one of my favorite and most informative educational experiences
at this University and I would not trade it for anything I have
accomplished at the University of Richmond academically."
"It is astounding to me that without participating in the
service aspect of this course I would most likely be an ardent
supporter of SOLs to this day...I have learned that there is a much
more important world outside the classroom where the futures of
children are created and the lives of adults are influenced...Many
of the concepts that I discovered in the books came to life when I
looked into the eyes of those they were affecting...However, perhaps
the most important lesson is that I have learned that I have much to
learn."
"Thank you for incorporating the service learning into the
class. Being a Jepson minor, it is nice to see that other
departments are beginning to see the importance of service in the
learning process."
"From my project on the allocation of lottery funds and
the accompanying service-learning project, I was able to see how
policy is made, who implements it, and who the policy
effects...[Finally] it was the service-learning project that drove
home a more positive view of bureaucracy and public service. Having
an opportunity to interact with public servants and taking the time
to think about their work as they educate children, leads me to
conclude that they serve a very important and very necessary
function in our free society...[and] recognize how worthy the public
servants are of our undying gratitude and praise."
"I am preparing to exit the University of Richmond...In my
arrogance, I believed that my learning of political science had
peaked and I was not expecting to learn much more...[public servants
must] perform selflessly and realize that your actions are changing
the lives of others...I thank you for allowing me to learn what
cannot be taught in any text."
