Teaching

Professors approach the study of religion as any other academic discipline. Belief must be backed up with research and historic and present day texts. Students begin the major by taking classes in several world religions, past and present. From this foundation, courses conquer the different methodologies by which scholars study religion. Professors are always conscious of the controversial nature of many religious topics and invite students from all perspectives and backgrounds to share their experiences and understanding equally. In this way, students gain a well-rounded understanding of the subject and an understanding of contemporary issues facing religion as an academic discipline.

Classes incorporate rich readings and opportunities for extensive exploration through writing. Professors approach religion courses from a range of perspectives based on their own academic disciplines and interests.  As a result, students are introduced to a wide variety of subject areas, including everything from psychology, sociology, anthropology and feminism to philosophy, structuralism, post-modernism and post-colonialism.
