University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

Richmond offers a major and minor in religion. The curriculum examines a wide variety of world religions and also takes the time to explore particular areas of interest in great depth. Through the diverse selection of classes, students gain an understanding of religion’s impact on art, history and countless other aspects of culture. The religion department shares the University’s belief in interdisciplinary study and encourages students to double major in a field that complements their program of study in religion.

Every religion major will end their course of study with a seminar and a colloquium. The seminar introduces them to the spectrum of disagreement surrounding the methods of studying religion as a social phenomenon. This course is designed to build a foundation for the senior thesis. In the colloquium, students participate in discussions and critical analysis of thesis topics, with the course culminating in the paper itself.
