Mission

Digital Initiatives is part of Information Services' effort to bring together separate and distinct digital endeavors taking place across campus for the benefit of our university community and the scholarly community at large. As part of Boatwright Memorial Library, Digital Initiatives has three main functions:

  • Digitization and digital preservation: Digital Production Services, a component of Digital Initiatives, is responsible for the conversion of text- and image-based material to digital formats appropriate for numerous purposes, including online delivery and preservation. Staff members and students within this division use flatbed, overhead and specialized photography equipment for the creation of digital content.

  • Digital collection building and maintenance: Digital Initiatives maintains numerous existing digital collections hosted at the University of Richmond, and is responsible for providing access to collections digitized by Digital Production Services. Several digital repository systems are currently in use, including DLXS and Greenstone.

  • Participate in the broader effort on campus to create and leverage digital content for teaching and learning, and to promote the use of open access materials in the classroom and beyond.

In addition to locally produced digital resources and collections, the digital initiatives also encompass digital resources purchased and made available to the university community. These include research databases, electronic books and journals, image collections and services such as e-reserves.

Digital materials included in collections provided by Digital Initiatives, although open to the public, are intended for educational and research purposes only. Any other use, including but not limited to reproduction, redistribution, publication or transmission, is prohibited without specific written consent.
