F-1 and J-1 students who wish to travel to Canada or Mexico require a Canadian or Mexican tourist visa. Citizens of certain countries are exempt from the Canadian non-immigrant visa requirement. To determine if you are exempt, please consult the U.S. State Department's information on the Visa Waiver Program. You can also check with the Canadian embassy to find out whether your home country is exempt from this visa requirement.

F-1 and J-1 students with an expired U.S. visa may enter Canada and Mexico without renewing their visa as long as your stay is no longer than 30 days. Please note that starting April 1, 2002, this benefit will not apply to citizens of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, North Korea, and Cuba, and any nonimmigrant who applies for a visa renewal during their trip to Canada, Mexico, and adjacent islands. You must present a valid passport and meet all other requirements for your entry to Canada and Mexico and your return to the U.S. For more information about applying for a nonimmigrant visa, visit the Canadian embassy's website at or the Mexican embassy's website.
