If a student or foreign scholar wishes to change his or her status, he/she must meet the International Student Advisor to discuss the possibilities of such a change. The International Student Advisor cannot provide legal advice or guidance for persons wishing to change their status to permanent residency. The student/scholar must contact the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service or INS) directly or hire an immigration lawyer. Permanent residence status is extremely difficult to obtain, and the procedure requires a great deal of time due to its complexity. The ISA has a list of immigration lawyers available to international students and scholars. The lawyers on the list do not represent any endorsement by the Office of International Education.
