Prospective Students

International students who have been accepted to one of the University's graduate programs (Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, University of Richmond School of Law, Robins School of Business MBA Program, or School of Continuing Studies) are eligible to receive an I-20 form to apply for an F-1 student visa upon completion of the I-20 Authorization Form.

Current F-1 international students who need to transfer their I-20 from their most recent U.S. institution within 5 months of completing their program must also complete the F-1/J-1 Transfer Request Form.

Proof of Adequate Finances

In order to issue you an I-20 immigration document for you to apply for your student visa, we require proof of adequate finances during your time at Richmond. One of the following documents is acceptable:

--Certification of Finances Form for the relevant program. This form must be certified by a bank officer with an official bank stamp.

--A letter from a financial institution signed by a bank officer on official stationery stating total amount of funds in U.S. dollars available to the graduate student during the first year of their graduate program.

--A bank statement belonging to a parent, guardian, or relative showing the current and average balances of the account, accompanied by a letter from the account owner verifying the amount available to the student during the first year of their graduate program. This letter must state the student's full name as it appears on their passport as well as the student's date of birth. All amounts must be converted into U.S. dollars.

--A bank statement belonging to the graduate student showing the current and average balances of the account. This statement must include information that identifies the student as the account owner. All amounts must be converted into U.S. dollars.

--The I-134 Affidavit of Support if the student is being sponsored by a non-family member. Two originals should be completed. One original should be mailed to the Office of International Education and the other original should be provided to the U.S. consulate for the visa application.

We can process your I-20 upon receipt of a faxed copy of the financial documents, but the originals must be mailed to the Office of International Education. Students should have a second original to submit as part of their student visa application at the U.S. consulate in their home country.
