Information for Exchange Student Academic Advisors

Applying as an Exchange Student

Students whose universities have a formal linkage with the University of Richmond should consult with their home coordinator for further information.

Students who want to apply as a 'fee-paying student' or 'free mover' should contact Krittika Onsanit, International Student Advisor, for additional instructions and information.

Students are required to send their transcript listing all courses and grades from their home institution (including the courses in which they are currently enrolled) and a TOEFL score or equivalent test results (for non-native English speakers only) to the University of Richmond. It is preferred that these forms be mailed from the student's home institution and not from the student directly.

If the application, transcript and TOEFL scores have been submitted to Richmond, exchange students can be pre-registered for courses in mid-October and at the end of March for the fall and spring semesters respectively. When the upcoming semester's course schedule is available from the Registrar's office, a weblink to this information along with a course request form and instructions will be emailed to your exchange coordinator. The course request form should be completed and faxed or emailed as an attachment to our office by the deadline stated in the email message. Students who do not submit this in a timely manner will be registered at a later date or upon arrival.  Students should select a wide array of courses as some courses may be closed or may require prerequisites.

For further information, please consult your home university or send an email to intlstudents@richmond.edu.

Forms for Exchange Students

To print these documents, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free.

The Exchange Student Checklist can be downloaded to help students keep track of their forms and deadlines.

It is preferred that these forms come to Richmond via your home study abroad coordinator rather than directly from the student.  They can be submitted together or separately.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Proof of Adequate Finances (2008-09 rates now available)

In order to issue you a DS-2019 or I-20 immigration document for you to apply for your student visa, we require proof of adequate finances during your time at Richmond. One of the following documents is acceptable:

--Certification of Finances form for exchange students from UR partner institutions or Certification of Finances form for fee-paying students. This form must be certified by a bank officer with an official bank stamp.

--A letter from a financial institution signed by a bank officer on official stationery stating total amount of funds in U.S. dollars available to the student during their exchange program.

--A bank statement belonging to a parent, guardian, or relative showing the current and average balances of the account, accompanied by a letter from the account owner verifying the amount available to the student during their exchange program. This letter must state the student's full name as it appears on their passport as well as the student's date of birth. All amounts must be converted into U.S. dollars.

--A bank statement belonging to the exchange student showing the current and average balances of the account. This statement must include information that identifies the student as the account owner. All amounts must be converted into U.S. dollars.

--The I-134 Affidavit of Support if the student is being sponsored by a non-family member. Two originals should be completed. One original should be mailed to the Office of International Education and the other original should be provided to the U.S. consulate for the visa application.

We can process your application upon receipt of a faxed or emailed copy of the financial documents, but the originals must be mailed to the Office of International Education. Students should have a second original to submit as part of their student visa application at the U.S. consulate in their home country.

Step 3:

Step 4:
