General Telephone Information Public Telephones Available in most public places. It costs .35 cents for a local call in most areas for three minutes. If you wish to talk longer, you must deposit a nickel (5 cents) for each additional three minutes. Emergency calls from public telephones, 911 if a life threatening emergency, are free of charge. Charge-A-Call Phones Blue phones located in public areas and may be used without coins. In order to use these phones you may charge the phone call to the person you are calling ("collect call" or reverse the charges), charge it to your home phone, or use a charge card obtained from the telephone company. Local Calls It is necessary to dial the seven-digit number indicated in the telephone directory. Emergency phones are located throughout the campus. They are connected to University Police and function automatically; all one needs to do is pick up the receiver. Long Distance Calls Within the Same Area Code Dial "1", then the seven-digit number. Long Distance Calls Outside the Local Area Dial "1", the area code if different, then the seven-digit number. Long distance rates for the United States are less expensive in the evenings and after 11 p.m. and at certain times on the weekends. Overseas Calls May be made directly to most countries. To inquire about codes and rates, call the international operator by dialing 00. Rates vary according to time of day and country. To make an overseas call 011 + country code + city code + and the local number. Operator assisted calls are more expensive, so it is better to dial directly, if possible. |
